Above my pay grade

Now that we live in an area which has real seasons (September 1st- it was cool...how does "it" know?) I decided to go through all the clothes and figure out what everyone needs for winter. I would say that this is a mothering skill for which no one prepared me, but that's not true. I used to do this with my Mom, only there were ten kids to clothe for the (Florida) winter, and trying on a million pairs of pants to see which of the seven brothers they best fit was more than a bit tedious. So I knew this would be one of my responsibilities as a mother but knowledge doesn't make it any less complicated!

My confusing categories included:
  • Me- clothes for winter
  • clothes for summer
  • clothes for the kids to grow in to (three + sizes)
  • clothes the kids have outgrown
  • clothes for next summer/winter when I'm not nursing (maybe I will wear a dress again one day!)
  • maternity clothes
  • in-between clothes (aka fat clothes)
  • Give-away
  • Goodwill
  • Once Upon a Child (which profited me a whopping $4.05...not even enough to motivate me to get my kids back out the car to pick up my money...I just put it on a tab. Next time, I'm going to walk up and down my street and see if there is anyone who needs my cute kids clothes.)
  • Maternity clothes to let friend borrow
  • Maternity clothes to return to rightful owner (who happens to be pregnant again...Erin, you probably want that black dress back. I'll send you your size small. Do you want to borrow my size Medium, too?)
What a blessing to realize we always have so much more than we need (mostly through the generosity of friends) and see how God continues to provide for us! I place my hand over my mouth, and whisper a quiet prayer of thanks.

ugh! i HATE going through boxes. okay, and now i need to put my hand over my mouth and thank the Lord for clothing us so generously! i am kinda bummed, though, because now, i'm into one of those seasons where my children are needing new clothes for the next season(s). i went to a consignment shop AND goodwill this weekend. i found one pair of jeans for Lillian. that was it. i'll try again this week! :)

Not much to comment on about the boxes. You may have learned the skill from me, but your attitude is way...better than mine ever was.

However, I must comment on your curtains! They look so great. I noticed them before I realized there were even any boxes in the room :)

This sounds soooo familiar! Only I've never had the guts to take pictures of the sorting process, or to blog about it! I know the feeling, though. And you're right, it is neat to see how God provides so abundantly! It's just a matter of keeping that abundance remotely organized ... :-)

Love those boxes, Brite! I remember the days of switching from summer to winter and trying stacks of clothes on the boys. It was a drill moment-keeping them from wandering off in the latest tried-on-maybe-fits pair of jeans! "Where's John?" Oh, he's downstairs playing on the computer again....:) lol

Well, I haven't done as a mother yet... but I always remember loving that day as a kid. NEW CLOTHES! well.... old ones I could hardly remember. And it's always exciting when it's close enough to the official season change to have LONG SLEEVES (or tank tops, depending). Brite, maybe your kids aren't old enough yet to remember/get excited, but they will be soon.

Wahoo! I was wondering where that dress was! Sure would like it back when you get a chance ;) And if it's not too much trouble to borrow the medium, that would be sweet too! I'll email you our address.

Yeah, we just did boxes. And found out that most of Jeb's pants are about 2 inches too short even though the waist fits him. ;) Well, off to Goodwill it is....

Brite, Mom always labels the clothes like this:

Boys' 14W (winter), Girls 12S (summer), etc

Very helpful...however if Nicky is a 14, not everything necessarily fits. So, you go digging through the 16W's too. **grins**

There are nice things about not changing sizes anymore, I must say. :D

I did this for the three kids yesterday. I shut the bedroom door so they couldn't escape ;o) I also had a notebook sheet for each of them on which I made detailed notes.....some years I end up with a cute jumper or pair of pants but never get around to finding a shirt to make the outfit actually work.
By the way....When I went out yesterday afternoon I stumbled upon Old Navy's "Baby Sale" which includes 0-5T. I was able to get everything on Kirk's list (except jammies) for great prices in half an hour! Much better then the two hours I spent at the Jack&Jill sale last week and came home with just a handfull of things, cheaper $$$ wise but such a time drain. And ON had some really cute little boy stuff.
