Powerless

Last night our power went out around 8:15 due to a storm and didn't come back until we were in bed around 9:45. It was so nice to be "forced" to do nothing and sit around and talk by candlelight (and console our hysterical children who are noise dependent, thanks to our years living in a duplex, I mean, triplex). It was a cool evening so we sat out on the porch and watched the sun set and didn't miss the distractions or productivity of electricity at all.

Speaking of the old days, check out the ingenious contraption my husband set up for me last weekend:

For those of you born after 1990 (it's hard to believe, but there are ADULTS who were born after 1990!) and have never seen one of these, it's a clothesline. Except this one has a pulley, with one end attached to my side deck, and the other secured to the fence. This means I can open up the door on my side deck and hang out my laundry with these benefits:
  • I don't have to put shoes on or get my feet dirty
  • I can stand in one place and hang and collect my laundry
  • I am just a step outside the door so I can still hear the kids
  • My cloth diapers are sun bleached again
  • I can see it flowing in wind as I stand in the kitchen
My husband is a genius, that's all I can say. He spent $7 to put up a clothesline that would make me excited enough to use and blog about it. That's one smart man.

you know i'm always so happy for you when you get cool stuff, but this morning, i'm totally jealous along with my happiness for you. :) someday, i will hang my diapers to dry...and they will maybe be white again. *sigh*

p.s. you blog so early in the morning. i love that. thank you.

I'm assuming since Lauren loves you for blogging early in the morning, she doesn't care for me at all since I push "publish" seconds before midnight each night.

Yes, your husband is amazing - and the dirtless foot clothesline is something you should probably market.

Nicky called me two days ago asking where we got all our sound machines. I honestly couldn't believe she waited so long with three children in one tiny house!

That's great, Brite! Reminds me of my Scotland days, where our clothesline was on a pulley system in our kitchen! (There's nothing like clean clothes that smell like your latest meal.) I've gotta try to dry our diapers outside to get them white again!

hahaha, yeah right mrs. p. at least there's a new post from you every morning. brite hasn't been super consistent until recently. ;)

excuse me for being dense.... but why do you want a closeline? Is your drying broken? Or do you just want sunbleached diapers? I mean, the nostalgia makes it pretty worth it, though more time consuming. So I'm just wondering what triggered the quest for an easy closeline.

I feel like the people in the apartments around us might get upset if we strung a clothesline across their porches and in their "yards." Too bad! I'm set on hanging everything to dry anyways, so I just use my drying rack + a quilt rack. But they don't get bleached by the sun or aired out the way they would outside! Can't wait until we have a house.
