Beer: the multi-purpose beverage
We started everything for our garden from seed this year, and much to my (pleasant) surprise almost everything came up beautifully. Sitting in our basement under grow lights, the lettuce, spinach, and chard were flourishing. I transplanted them to the garden, left for a week, and came back to plant nubs. Very disheartening. A friend suggested something bigger was eating it from the top, and something smaller- slugs perhaps- from the bottom. The solution...throw the slugs a party. We put little dixie cups of beer out there and those night-owl pests prefer the yeast in the beer to the leafy green lettuce. Gardening is still such a new thing for us- so much to learn. I've never been a big fan of bugs, but perhaps we need to make a lapbook with all the garden pests we discover.

Reference to "lapbooks" made me laugh out loud. File that under words / concepts I have not thought about in a decade. Ah, Dinah Zike.
Next time we all get together, we should each make a lapbook of what our lives are like right now as a way of catching up.
We've had slugs eating our zinnias this year. Not fun! After handpicking some and setting yeasty traps for others, we're seeing a little relief ... We've got lots to learn, too. Working on it!

Ah yes, beer and slugs, a deadly love affair. Brings back memories of a slug infested Washington childhood.
