My Mom passed along the great idea of photo-copying the cover of each book and having the children narrate the story on the back. The kids have these covers in their school notebook so they can look back and remember all the books we read this year. It's also pretty funny to hear what they comprehend. Coop's narratives are thorough and provide a nice overview. Sweet A's reveal she was coloring and crafting way more than listening, which is okay when you are only three years old. For Mr. Popper's Penguins I think her narrative went like this (Spoiler ALERT!): "First there were no penguins. Then they came. Then they sailed away on a ship."
As you were growing up, what was your favorite book? I have a love/hate relationship with Carry On, Mr. Bowditch.

I was in love with the Chronicles of Narnia Series! Also was a lover of the Nancy Drew series in elementary school, the Cherry Ames series in middle school, and was captivated by Uncle Tom's Cabin in high school. As a little girl I remember adoring Little Mommy & Where Did the Baby Go? (both Little Golden Books) I wanted to be JUST like the mommy in Little Mommy and would play act the story all the time.
Mrs. Piggle Wiggle!!!!!!!!!!! One of my favorites!!! I'm gonna have to pull that out for my kids very very soon. I love your idea of writing their narrations on the back of the copied cover... I am already doing the cover thing with our notebooks too, so I think I will steal your mom's fabulous idea. Isn't reading with them so much fun?? I love when they wake up asking to read. Much better than asking to turn on the tv when they wake up!!! (Which they still do sometimes...I never claimed to be supermom!) :) Hope you are having a good week.
My kids loved James Herriot's Treasury for Children--very sweet animal stories that I still go back to as outstanding examples of good writing.
Barbara
Sadly, I do not remember ever being read to as a child, which is probably why I went a tad overboard with my own :)
However, as a young teen I fell in love with the poetry in A Child's Garden of Verses - and I'm so happy that my grandchildren are now memorizing some of those.
BTW- Have I told you lately what a wonderful mother you are?
Okay, that is a great idea! Thanks Mrs. Pittman! I need to start photocopying covers and having the kids write something they remember. I think I need to do that for myself as well and keep a notebook of what I am reading.
That Dragon series was one of my favorites. These days I'm lucky if I have time to read an entire article on cnn.com, let alone a book ... glad you're helping them enjoy it while they can!
That is a great idea about the covers.
We just finished Mrs Frisby & The Rats of Nimn. That is a great book. I know I read it more than once as a girl, but there is a lot to talk about. It may be a little old yet for your crew.
My favorite book(s) were the Laura Ingalls Wilder series, until I read the Chronicles of Narnia!
Barbara, I need to pull out the James Herriot- great idea!
Shep, I don't remember reading those books as a child- maybe I thought I was too mature for them. ;-)
Jonesey, I'll add it to our list of books for later.
ooooooh, I'm totally stealing that cover idea.
I read so much when I was little, my "favorite" would have to be a list at least 10 books/series long. But as far as reading aloud goes, my mom read aloud The Hobbit to us, and then the whole Lord of the Rings. I honestly don't know if I would care about it very much if I'd just read it on my own. The first part is very slow and hard to get into.
Anyway, I found all the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle books at McKay a while back for less than $5!!! that was very exciting.
