Another one bites the dust

We've whittled our way down to milk and tea (and coffee for the adults, of course) as the main beverages around here, but I still buy orange juice and let the kids have about 4 oz. a day. It's not much, but it seemed like a small morning ritual I didn't want to take away from them.

Until I noticed that my "from concentrate" juice came from many other countries. My goal: the juice needs to come from my same continent. Not real high standards here. I started buying "Not from concentrate" juice that was only from Florida oranges...still a far cry from the juice my dad used to squeeze from our three orange trees out back. I repent in dust an ashes for not appreciating that more, Dad. Pulp and all.

So, thinking that this was the better choice, I was willing to fork over the money for the pricier juice. We're not going through it very quickly anyway. And then, I had to go and read this:

Just reading the interview and the process of how juice is stored in massive tanks, stripped of everything, and then flavor packets of essential essence and oils are added back in- makes me want to swear off the stuff for life. And this is the process used for "not from concentrate" or "fresh" juice. It's SO HARD to find real food these days!

As a native Floridian, I found all the history behind orange juice- it's production, processing, and how it became a world-wide custom to drink juice for breakfast (only in the last 50 years, btw)- fascinating. I know, I'm a dork. But maybe you are, too.

do you remember that my dad owned an orange juice company? it was called Florida's Own. it was fresh squeezed and not pasturized. it literally went straight from the oranges to the bottle. it HAD to be frozen immediately and kept frozen until it made it to the store, where it had to stay at a constant, low temperature there. it was incredible. i won't tell the story of how all of it went down the drain, because it is too depressing, but all that to say ... there was once a man who made and sold (all over the country, actually--even Hawaii) REAL orange juice--he is my dad. *proud smile*

Lauren, I don't think I knew that about your family! Wow- you probably would enjoy the book, then (fellow dorks unite)! ;-) I remember that brand...that's really amazing.

Well, then just squeeze your own - yes? :)

ugh....Brite, this is just such a sad situation. The kids only get a bit of apple juice per day in our household. I don't even want to know how messed up that juice is! I did know that Vitamin C is very reactive with the air. It loses its potency/effectiveness right away. Best to go with the real deal!

we stopped buying juice a few years ago because of all the concentrated sugar involved. milk, water, tea are our beverages of choice.

i do want to read that book. i love books like that (ebay, the perfect store is a great business story book also, and one about how the ipod came to be is another fun read).

lauren, that is a great story and i wish it was still made that way (we have a friend that used to work there in the summers when he was younger) and so we knew that back story. tell your dad that i heard that he was a CLASS ACT!

brite, i just read [most of] the article (finally). sad to say i knew most of the information. Florida's Natural juice's plant is right down the street from my (former) home (my parents still live there *smile*). my dad told me years ago what they were starting to do to their juice. SUCH a bummer. check it out...there used to be orange groves RIGHT across the street from the plant, which is where they got their oranges, but they dug them up. now that land is used as a retention area for all of the water and chemicals that come out of the plant. :(

lea, that is so crazy! my dad is a class act--totally amazing. the way the Lord used that whole horrible situation has been amazing. my dad's good name and reputation of integrity is known all over Florida and all over the coumtry by people who are in real estate. he's a CCIM and is even on the national and state board. so, even though our family was pretty destitute after the whole thing, God used it for good and has blessed my dad so much! and the rest of us, for that matter. :) we started homeschooling right as Florida's Own was closed and bonded closely as a family. it was awesome. that's SO cool that you knew someone who worked there! ha!
